How to Clean AC Condenser Coils

  • Time: 1 hour
  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Steps: 5

Dirt and cottonwood on the outdoor coils make your AC run longer. Clean them each spring before the heat hits.

Tools & materials

  • Garden hose with a spray nozzle
  • Coil cleaner (no-rinse, optional)
  • Soft brush
  • Fin comb
  • Screwdriver

Step by step

  1. Step 1

Turn off the AC at the thermostat and pull the disconnect or turn off the breaker at the outdoor unit.

  2. Step 2

Clear leaves, weeds and debris around the unit. Keep 2 feet of clearance on all sides.

  3. Step 3

Gently brush loose debris off the fins. Straighten bent fins with a fin comb.

  4. Step 4

Spray coil cleaner if needed, then rinse the coils from inside to outside with a gentle hose stream. Never pressure-wash.

  5. Step 5

Let it dry, restore the power and turn the AC back on.
