How to Clean a Dishwasher Filter

  • Time: 15 min
  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Steps: 5

Most dishwashers made in the last decade have a manual filter that needs cleaning every month or two.

Tools & materials

  • Soft brush or old toothbrush
  • Dish soap
  • Sink of warm water
  • Towel

Step by step

  1. Step 1

Pull out the bottom rack and find the filter at the base of the tub, usually a round cylinder.

  2. Step 2

Twist it counterclockwise and lift out the cylinder and the flat mesh filter.

  3. Step 3

Rinse under warm water and scrub with a soft brush and dish soap. Don't use wire brushes.

  4. Step 4

Wipe out any debris in the filter well.

  5. Step 5

Reinstall the flat filter, then twist the cylinder in until it locks.
