How to Mount a TV on the Wall

  • Time: 1–2 hours
  • Difficulty: Moderate
  • Steps: 6

A wall-mounted TV must be screwed into studs with lag bolts. Drywall anchors alone aren't safe for TVs.

Tools & materials

  • TV wall mount rated for your TV's size and weight
  • Stud finder
  • Drill and bits
  • Level
  • Socket wrench
  • Helper

Step by step

  1. Step 1

Check the VESA hole pattern on the back of the TV and buy a mount that fits and is rated above its weight.

  2. Step 2

Pick the height: the screen center is usually around seated eye level, 42–48 inches from the floor.

  3. Step 3

Find and mark two studs. Hold the wall plate level and mark the holes.

  4. Step 4

Drill pilot holes into the stud centers and drive the lag bolts until the plate is snug.

  5. Step 5

Attach the brackets to the TV, then lift it with a helper and hook it onto the wall plate. Lock the safety screws.

  6. Step 6

Route cables with a cord cover. In-wall wiring needs a rated in-wall kit.
