How to Replace a Refrigerator Water Filter

  • Time: 10 min
  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Steps: 5

Most fridge filters should be changed every 6 months. The swap takes a few minutes and no tools.

Tools & materials

  • Correct replacement filter (check the model number)
  • Towel
  • Large pitcher

Step by step

  1. Step 1

Find the filter: inside the top right corner, in the base grille, or behind a door in the back.

  2. Step 2

Turn it counterclockwise (or press the eject button) and pull it out over a towel.

  3. Step 3

Remove the cap from the new filter and push or twist it in until it locks.

  4. Step 4

Run 2–4 gallons through the dispenser to flush air and carbon fines.

  5. Step 5

Reset the filter light (usually by holding the filter or light button for 3 seconds).
