How to Replace Door Weatherstripping

  • Time: 30–60 min
  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Steps: 6

Daylight around a closed door means air and money are leaking out. New weatherstripping is a cheap, high-impact fix.

Tools & materials

  • Replacement weatherstrip (kerf-in foam or adhesive type)
  • Door sweep (optional)
  • Utility knife or scissors
  • Tape measure
  • Rubbing alcohol

Step by step

  1. Step 1

Close the door and look for daylight or feel for drafts along the sides, top and bottom.

  2. Step 2

Pull the old weatherstrip out of the frame groove, or peel and clean off the old adhesive.

  3. Step 3

Measure each side and cut new weatherstripping to length.

  4. Step 4

Press kerf-style strips into the groove, or clean with alcohol and apply adhesive strips to the stop molding.

  5. Step 5

Check the bottom and replace a worn door sweep if light shows under the door.

  6. Step 6

Close the door. It should seal snugly but still latch without slamming.
