- Shovel and post hole digger

- Gravel
- Fast-setting concrete mix (or a new post)
- Bucket of water
- Call 811 first
Step by step
- Step 1
Call 811 a few days before digging so buried utility lines get marked.
- Step 2
Dig around the post and pull it out. Replace it if the base is rotted.
- Step 3
Add 3–4 inches of gravel at the bottom of the hole for drainage.
- Step 4
Set the post so the mailbox will sit 41–45 inches above the road, 6–8 inches back from the curb.
- Step 5
Hold it plumb with a level and fill with fast-setting concrete per the bag directions.
- Step 6
Brace the post until the concrete sets, then reattach the mailbox.
