What counts as an emergency
While you wait
These steps limit damage until a pro arrives. Only do what you can do safely.
Turn off the fixture's shut-off valve, or the main water valve, usually near the water meter in the basement or utility room.
If water is near outlets, panels or appliances, do not touch them. Turn off the breaker only if you can reach the panel while standing somewhere dry.
Leave the building, don't flip switches, and call 911 or your gas utility from outside. Call us after the utility says it's safe.
Take photos and video of the damage before cleanup. Your insurer and property manager will ask for them.
