How to Adjust Cabinet Doors That Won't Close

  • Time: 15 min
  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Steps: 6

Concealed hinges have adjustment screws for three directions. A few quarter turns fixes most crooked doors.

Tools & materials

  • #2 Phillips screwdriver
  • Phone flashlight

Step by step

  1. Step 1

Open the door and look at the hinge. You'll find a side screw (toward the door), a depth screw and the mounting screws.

  2. Step 2

Tighten the mounting screws first. A loose hinge is the most common problem.

  3. Step 3

To move the door left or right, turn the side-adjustment screw (closest to the door) a quarter turn at a time.

  4. Step 4

To pull the door in or out (depth), turn the screw in the hinge arm that slides the hinge on its plate.

  5. Step 5

To raise or lower the door, loosen the mounting plate screws, slide it up or down and retighten.

  6. Step 6

Close the door after each adjustment and repeat until the gaps are even.
