- Lipstick or a dry-erase marker

Step by step
- Step 1
Rub lipstick on the latch bolt, close the door gently, and look where it marks the strike plate.
- Step 2
Tighten all hinge screws first. Sagging hinges are the most common cause.
- Step 3
If the mark is just above or below the opening, file the strike plate opening a little toward the mark.
- Step 4
If it's off by more than 1/8 inch, remove the strike plate, move it, chisel the recess and re-screw it.
- Step 5
Fill old screw holes with toothpicks and glue before re-driving screws.
