How to Fix a Dripping P-Trap Under the Sink

  • Time: 20–40 min
  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Steps: 5

The curved pipe under your sink is held together by slip nuts and washers. Most drips are a loose nut or a worn washer.

Tools & materials

  • Bucket
  • Channel-lock pliers
  • Replacement slip washers or a new P-trap kit (1-1/4 or 1-1/2 inch)
  • Rag
  • Flashlight

Step by step

  1. Step 1

Put a bucket under the trap. Dry the pipes with a rag, run water and watch to find exactly where the drip starts.

  2. Step 2

Hand-tighten the slip nut at the leak, then give it a quarter turn more with pliers. Don't over-tighten plastic nuts.

  3. Step 3

If it still drips, loosen both slip nuts and remove the trap. Dump the water and debris into the bucket.

  4. Step 4

Replace the beveled slip washers (the bevel faces the joint), or install a new trap kit of the same size.

  5. Step 5

Reassemble, hand-tighten plus a quarter turn, then run water for a full minute and check with a dry tissue.

When to stop and call ProFix

If you see any of these, stop and call us:

  • The leak is coming from the drain pipe in the wall
  • The pipe is old metal that's corroded or crumbling
  • Water damage has softened the cabinet floor
  • The sink drains slowly even after cleaning the trap
