How to Fix a Leaky Faucet

  • Time: 45–90 min
  • Difficulty: Moderate
  • Steps: 6

A faucet that drips from the spout almost always has a worn cartridge, washer or seat. Bring the old part to the store so you get an exact match.

Tools & materials

  • Adjustable wrench
  • Screwdrivers and an Allen key set
  • Replacement cartridge or washer kit (match your brand)
  • Plumber's grease
  • Rag to plug the drain

Step by step

  1. Step 1

Shut off the hot and cold valves under the sink, then open the faucet to drain the lines. Plug the drain so small parts can't fall in.

  2. Step 2

Pry off the decorative cap and remove the handle screw, then lift off the handle.

  3. Step 3

Remove the retaining nut or clip and pull out the cartridge (or stem). Take a phone photo of how it sits before removing it.

  4. Step 4

Take the old part to a hardware store and buy an exact match.

  5. Step 5

Coat the O-rings of the new cartridge with plumber's grease and install it in the same orientation.

  6. Step 6

Reassemble the handle, turn the water back on slowly and check for drips at the spout and under the sink.

When to stop and call ProFix

If you see any of these, stop and call us:

  • The valves under the sink won't shut off or are corroded
  • The leak is coming from under the sink or inside the wall
  • Parts are seized or the faucet body is cracked
  • You'd rather replace the whole faucet
