How to Fix Drywall Nail Pops

  • Time: 30 min + drying
  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Steps: 5

Nail pops happen when framing shrinks and nails back out. Hammering them back in only works for a few months.

Tools & materials

  • Drill with drywall screws (1-5/8 inch)
  • Hammer
  • Lightweight joint compound
  • Putty knife
  • Sanding sponge
  • Primer and paint

Step by step

  1. Step 1

Drive a drywall screw 1.5 inches above and below the popped nail to pull the drywall tight to the stud.

  2. Step 2

Tap the popped nail below the surface, or pull it out and screw in its place.

  3. Step 3

Set the new screw heads just below the surface without tearing the paper.

  4. Step 4

Cover the dents with two thin coats of joint compound, letting each dry.

  5. Step 5

    Sand smooth, spot-prime and paint.
