How to Touch Up Wall Paint So It Blends

  • Time: 30 min
  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Steps: 6

Touch-ups show when the sheen, color or application doesn't match. Small brush, thin paint and feathered edges make the difference.

Tools & materials

  • Leftover paint (or a color-matched sample)
  • Small angled brush or mini foam roller
  • Primer for patched areas
  • Rag
  • Stir stick

Step by step

  1. Step 1

Clean the area with a damp rag and let it dry.

  2. Step 2

Spot-prime any patched or bare spots so they don't look dull.

  3. Step 3

Stir the paint well. Use the same tool type as the original: roller for rolled walls, brush for trim.

  4. Step 4

Apply a thin coat and feather the edges outward with a nearly dry brush or roller.

  5. Step 5

Let it dry fully and check under the room's normal light before adding a second thin coat.

  6. Step 6

If the patch still flashes, paint the wall from corner to corner instead.

When to stop and call ProFix

If you see any of these, stop and call us:

  • The touch-up is on a large wall with flat light hitting it
  • You don't have the original color and can't get a match
