How to Fix a Sagging Gate

  • Time: 30–60 min
  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Steps: 5

Gates sag as hinges loosen and the frame racks out of square. An anti-sag kit pulls it back into shape.

Tools & materials

  • Anti-sag gate kit (cable and turnbuckle)
  • Drill/driver
  • Exterior screws
  • Level
  • Wood shim

Step by step

  1. Step 1

Prop the gate's latch side up with a shim so it's level and closes cleanly.

  2. Step 2

Tighten or replace hinge screws with longer exterior screws.

  3. Step 3

Install the anti-sag cable from the top hinge corner diagonally to the bottom latch corner.

  4. Step 4

Tighten the turnbuckle until the gate holds square, then remove the shim.

  5. Step 5

Adjust the latch if needed so it catches easily.
