How to Hang a Curtain Rod in Drywall

  • Time: 30–45 min
  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Steps: 6

Curtain rods pull out when they're hung with the tiny anchors in the box. Use real anchors or hit the framing above the window.

Tools & materials

  • Curtain rod and brackets
  • Tape measure
  • Level
  • Drill
  • Self-drilling or toggle anchors
  • Pencil

Step by step

  1. Step 1

Mount brackets 4–6 inches above the window trim and 3–6 inches out past each side.

  2. Step 2

Mark one bracket, then use a level to mark the other at the same height.

  3. Step 3

Check for the header framing above the window. Screw straight into wood where you can.

  4. Step 4

Use heavy-duty drywall anchors where there's no wood. Skip the plastic anchors in the box.

  5. Step 5

Add a center bracket for rods over 60 inches wide.

  6. Step 6

Mount the rod, hang the curtains and check that it stays level.
