Safety first: work only with the breaker off and the wires tested dead with a non-contact voltage tester. If you're unsure which breaker it is, or anything looks damaged, stop and call.
Tools & materials
- LED-compatible dimmer (single-pole or 3-way to match)
- Non-contact voltage tester
- Screwdrivers
- Wire strippers
- Wire connectors
Step by step
- Step 1
Turn off the breaker and confirm with a voltage tester that the switch is dead.
- Step 2
Remove the cover and switch, and photograph how it's wired.
- Step 3
Most dimmers have wire leads: connect the two switch wires to the dimmer's black leads, and the ground to the green lead.
- Step 4
Twist on connectors firmly and tug-test each one.
- Step 5
Fold the wires in, mount the dimmer and cover plate, then turn the breaker on.
- Step 6
Test the full dim range. If LEDs flicker, adjust the dimmer's low-end trim setting.
When to stop and call ProFix
If you see any of these, stop and call us:
- The switch box has three or more cables (3-way or 4-way circuits)
- There's no neutral and your smart dimmer needs one
- The box is crowded or too shallow for the dimmer
- You see aluminum or cloth-insulated wiring
