How to Reset a Tripped Circuit Breaker

  • Time: 10 min
  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Steps: 5

A breaker trips to protect the circuit from overload. Resetting it is safe once you've unplugged what caused it.

Tools & materials

  • Flashlight
  • Your panel's breaker labels
  • Non-contact voltage tester (optional)

Step by step

  1. Step 1

Unplug or switch off the devices on the dead circuit, especially heaters, hair dryers and microwaves.

  2. Step 2

Open the panel door and look for a breaker handle sitting in the middle position or offset from the others.

  3. Step 3

Push that handle firmly all the way to OFF first, then back to ON. It should click into place.

  4. Step 4

Check whether the power is back, then plug devices back in one at a time.

  5. Step 5

If it trips again right away with nothing plugged in, leave it off and call.
