How to Re-hang a Cabinet Door

  • Time: 20 min
  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Steps: 5

Cabinet doors come off when hinge screws strip out of the wood. A little glue and a toothpick fix will make the holes like new.

Tools & materials

  • Screwdriver
  • Wood toothpicks or golf tees
  • Wood glue
  • Utility knife
  • Replacement hinge if the old one is bent

Step by step

  1. Step 1

Remove the door and hinges completely and check the hinges for bent arms or broken clips.

  2. Step 2

For stripped holes, dip 2–3 toothpicks in wood glue, push them into the hole, snap them flush and let the glue set about 30 minutes.

  3. Step 3

Screw the hinges back onto the door, then hold the door in place and drive the screws into the cabinet frame.

  4. Step 4

Close the door and check the gaps. Use the hinge adjustment screws to even it up (see our guide on adjusting cabinet doors).

  5. Step 5

Open and close the door several times to make sure it clears the neighboring doors.
