How to Replace a Cabinet Hinge

  • Time: 20 min
  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Steps: 5

Most kitchen hinges are standard European cup hinges. Matching the overlay and mount type is the key to a clean swap.

Tools & materials

  • Replacement hinge (match the overlay and mounting plate)
  • Screwdriver
  • Tape measure
  • Phone for photos

Step by step

  1. Step 1

Photograph the old hinge and note the brand and any numbers stamped on it.

  2. Step 2

Measure the overlay: how far the door covers the cabinet frame (often 1/2, 1-1/4 inch or full overlay).

  3. Step 3

Unclip or unscrew the hinge from the mounting plate, then remove it from the door cup.

  4. Step 4

Press the new hinge into the cup hole and screw it in.

  5. Step 5

Clip it onto the mounting plate and adjust (see our cabinet door adjustment guide).
