How to Replace a Deadbolt

  • Time: 30–45 min
  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Steps: 6

Replacing a deadbolt is a great security upgrade and fits the existing holes in most doors.

Tools & materials

  • New deadbolt (match the 2-3/8 or 2-3/4 inch backset)
  • Screwdriver or drill
  • Tape measure
  • 3-inch screws for the strike plate

Step by step

  1. Step 1

Measure the backset (door edge to the center of the hole) so you buy a matching deadbolt.

  2. Step 2

Unscrew the interior thumb-turn, pull out both halves and remove the bolt from the door edge.

  3. Step 3

Set the new bolt to the correct backset, insert it in the edge with the bevel or arrow facing up, and screw it in.

  4. Step 4

Slide the exterior cylinder through the bolt, then attach the interior turn and screws.

  5. Step 5

Install the new strike plate using 3-inch screws so it anchors into the framing.

  6. Step 6

Test with the door open and closed. The bolt should throw fully without forcing.
