How to Replace an Exterior Light Fixture

  • Time: 1 hour
  • Difficulty: Moderate
  • Steps: 6

Outdoor fixtures are wired like indoor ones, but they need a weather-tight seal so water can't reach the box.

Tools & materials

  • Wet-location rated fixture
  • Non-contact voltage tester
  • Screwdrivers
  • Wire connectors
  • Exterior silicone caulk
  • Ladder

Step by step

  1. Step 1

Turn off the breaker and confirm the wires are dead with a voltage tester.

  2. Step 2

Remove the old fixture and disconnect the wires, photographing the setup first.

  3. Step 3

Mount the new bracket and connect black to black, white to white and ground to ground.

  4. Step 4

Install the gasket that comes with the fixture between the base and the wall.

  5. Step 5

Mount the fixture, then caulk around the top and sides, leaving the bottom open so any moisture can drain.

  6. Step 6

Install bulbs, restore power and test.
