How to Reseal a Deck

  • Time: 1 day
  • Difficulty: Moderate
  • Steps: 6

A deck needs resealing when water soaks in instead of beading. Seal it every 1–3 years to prevent rot and splinters.

Tools & materials

  • Deck cleaner
  • Stiff brush or pressure washer (low setting)
  • Exterior deck stain or sealer
  • Roller, pad or brush
  • Painter's tape

Step by step

  1. Step 1

Do the water test: sprinkle water on the deck. If it soaks in within minutes, it's time to seal.

  2. Step 2

Replace any rotted boards and set popped nails or screws.

  3. Step 3

Clean the deck with deck cleaner and a brush, rinse and let it dry 24–48 hours.

  4. Step 4

Tape off siding and doors. Work in the shade on a dry day with no rain forecast for 24 hours.

  5. Step 5

Apply thin, even coats of sealer along 2–3 boards at a time, back-brushing to work it in.

  6. Step 6

Let it dry fully before walking on it (check the label).
