How to Reset a GFCI Outlet

  • Time: 5–10 min
  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Steps: 5

When a bathroom or outdoor outlet goes dead, a GFCI outlet somewhere upstream has probably tripped.

Tools & materials

  • Lamp or phone charger for testing
  • Flashlight

Step by step

  1. Step 1

Unplug everything from the dead outlets.

  2. Step 2

Look for a GFCI outlet (TEST and RESET buttons) in the same room, nearby bathrooms, the garage, basement or by the exterior door.

  3. Step 3

Press RESET firmly until it clicks.

  4. Step 4

Plug in a lamp to confirm the power is back at the dead outlets.

  5. Step 5

Test monthly: press TEST (power should cut off), then RESET.

When to stop and call ProFix

If you see any of these, stop and call us:

  • The GFCI won't reset or trips again right away
  • It trips when it rains (outdoor wiring may be wet)
  • The outlet is warm or discolored
  • Power doesn't return after resetting every GFCI and breaker
