How to Tighten a Loose Handrail

  • Time: 30–45 min
  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Steps: 5

A loose handrail is a fall risk. Most can be fixed by re-securing the brackets into wall studs.

Tools & materials

  • Stud finder
  • Drill/driver
  • 2-1/2 or 3-inch wood screws
  • Toggle bolts (where no stud)
  • Level

Step by step

  1. Step 1

Find which brackets are loose by pushing the rail along its length.

  2. Step 2

Remove the loose bracket and use a stud finder to check whether it's on a stud.

  3. Step 3

If it's on a stud, use longer screws. If not, move it to the nearest stud along the rail.

  4. Step 4

Reattach the bracket and screw the rail back into it.

  5. Step 5

Test by leaning firmly on the rail. It should not move at all.

When to stop and call ProFix

If you see any of these, stop and call us:

  • The rail is attached to plaster or masonry
  • The newel post at the bottom is loose
  • The rail height is wrong for code (usually 34–38 inches) or missing on one side
