Active leak right now? Shut off the water first, then call ProFix 24/7 at 773-440-2252.
Tools & materials
- Flashlight
- Adjustable wrench or water meter key (for curb shutoffs)
- Towels and buckets
- Phone for photos
Step by step
- Step 1
For a single fixture leak, close the small valve under that sink or behind that toilet first (turn clockwise).
- Step 2
For a burst pipe, go to the main shutoff, usually where the water line enters the home: basement wall, crawlspace, utility closet or near the water heater.
- Step 3
Turn a round handle clockwise until it stops, or turn a lever handle a quarter turn so it's across the pipe.
- Step 4
Open a faucet on the lowest floor to drain pressure from the lines.
- Step 5
If water reaches outlets or the panel, don't step in standing water. Turn off power to that area only if you can reach the panel safely.
- Step 6
Take photos of the damage for insurance, then call for repair.
