How to Fix a Loose Toilet Seat

  • Time: 10 min
  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Steps: 5

A shifting toilet seat is almost always a loose nut under the bowl or a worn bolt. It's a ten-minute fix.

Tools & materials

  • Flat screwdriver
  • Adjustable wrench or socket
  • Replacement seat bolts (optional, stay-tight style)
  • Gloves

Step by step

  1. Step 1

Pop open the plastic caps at the back of the seat hinges to expose the bolt heads.

  2. Step 2

Center the seat on the bowl.

  3. Step 3

Hold the nut under the bowl with a wrench while you tighten the bolt from above with a screwdriver.

  4. Step 4

Tighten firmly but stop when snug. Overtightening can crack the porcelain.

  5. Step 5

If the bolts keep loosening, replace them with stay-tight or rubber-expansion bolts made for this problem.

When to stop and call ProFix

If you see any of these, stop and call us:

  • The toilet itself rocks on the floor
  • The bowl has a crack
