How to Replace a Light Switch or Outlet

  • Time: 30–45 min
  • Difficulty: Moderate
  • Steps: 6

Swapping a like-for-like switch or outlet is a common DIY job, but only with the breaker off and the wires tested dead.

Safety first: work only with the breaker off and the wires tested dead with a non-contact voltage tester. If you're unsure which breaker it is, or anything looks damaged, stop and call.

Tools & materials

  • Non-contact voltage tester
  • Screwdrivers
  • New switch or outlet (same type and amp rating)
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Electrical tape

Step by step

  1. Step 1

Turn off the breaker for the circuit, then test the device and its wires with a non-contact voltage tester to confirm the power is off.

  2. Step 2

Remove the cover plate and the two mounting screws, then gently pull the device out of the box.

  3. Step 3

Take a clear phone photo of which wire goes to which terminal before disconnecting anything.

  4. Step 4

Move the wires one at a time to the same positions on the new device: black/hot to brass, white/neutral to silver, bare/green to the green ground screw.

  5. Step 5

Wrap wires clockwise around the screws and tighten firmly. Avoid the push-in backstab holes.

  6. Step 6

Fold the wires back into the box, screw the device in, add the cover plate and turn the breaker back on to test.

When to stop and call ProFix

If you see any of these, stop and call us:

  • You see aluminum wiring, scorched insulation or melted plastic
  • There's no ground wire or more wires than the old device had places for
  • It's a 3-way switch, smart switch or 240V outlet
  • The outlet is near water and needs GFCI protection
