How to Replace a Toilet Wax Ring

  • Time: 2 hours
  • Difficulty: Hard
  • Steps: 6

Water around the base of the toilet usually means the wax ring has failed. It's a heavy job, so plan for a helper.

Tools & materials

  • New wax ring (or wax-free seal)
  • New closet bolts
  • Adjustable wrench
  • Putty knife
  • Sponge and bucket
  • Rag to plug the drain
  • Gloves

Step by step

  1. Step 1

Shut off the water, flush and sponge out the tank and bowl.

  2. Step 2

Disconnect the supply line, remove the caps and nuts from the floor bolts, and rock the toilet loose.

  3. Step 3

Lift it straight up with a helper and set it on cardboard. Stuff a rag in the drain to block sewer gas.

  4. Step 4

Scrape off all old wax from the flange and the toilet horn. Check the flange isn't cracked.

  5. Step 5

Install new closet bolts and the new wax ring, remove the rag, and lower the toilet straight down onto the bolts.

  6. Step 6

Press down evenly, tighten the nuts alternately until snug, reconnect the water and test for leaks.
